The first few months of Mayson Sonntag ‘s professional acting career haven’t gone according to script.

After graduating this spring from the theatre program at Ithaca College in New York, the particular 23-year-old Reginan hit the ground running when he landed one of the lead roles in CoComelon Live — a wildly popular children’s show that was preparing for a live tour across the U. S.


Needless to say, it was the short wait for his first big break.

“I was lucky enough to get this job straight out of college, which was not expected, ” Sonntag said during a recent stop in Richmond, VA. “Typically you have to grind for a couple years before you get something like this. I feel very lucky to be on a good international tour, especially for such a massive global brand.

“It has been a really incredible experience. ”

Sonntag, who now lives in New York, has been scheduled to wrap upward the trip this week after initially hitting the road in September. He couldn’t help but pinch himself while performing in iconic venues such as the Fox theatres in Atlanta and Detroit, plus the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, where the Emmy Awards are presented.

During a recent remain in L. The., Sonntag spotted actress Hilary Duff and her daughter in the particular front line.

“It really doesn’t feel real, ” said the lone Canadian on the show. “I feel very lucky to become part of this great group associated with people who are incredibly supportive. Four or five years ago when I was graduation from Luther College High School, if a person would have stated I’d perform in a show that Hilary Duff had been in the front row, I would have never believed it. Sonntag’s education began with music lessons at age three, when he was enrolled in the particular kids’ system at the University of Regina’s Conservatory of Performing Arts . He caught the particular acting bug about five years later through Do It With Class Young People’s Theater , followed by Regina Lyric Musical Theatre and Regina Summer Stage .

“I couldn’t advocate for those organizations more highly, ” this individual said. “They’re such a wonderful resource plus opportunity for people in Regina to perform within theatre locally and (for fans) in order to see great performances — stuff you wouldn’t think you’d see in the middle associated with Saskatchewan. We’re really fortunate to have groups like that. ”

Sonntag performed in local theatre with regard to 10 years prior to heading to Ithaca, home to one of the top theatre programs in the U. H. Thousands of students apply for the program each year but only 16 are accepted — and he was one of them.

Sonntag, who received a scholarship through SK Artistry, graduated in May and was auditioning regarding various functions when the particular CoComelon job basically “fell out of the sky. ”

“They needed someone to step into the role right away, ” he or she said. “Within a week (after applying for the job) We were in rehearsals and then on the particular road so it was very, really quick. We learned most of the material off of videos and in my living room. I’ve been doing (the show) for three months, all around the country. We’ve been up and down the east coast, west coast, Texas, north, south — everywhere you can think associated with. Our bus is a couple thousand miles away from having driven the circumference of the earth so we’ll get there by the end associated with the visit. ”

It has already been a whirlwind tour intended for Sonntag, that didn’t know much about CoComelon prior to the particular audition process.

The show became the viral sensation after debuting on YouTube within 2006 and eventually found its way into the mainstream — from television to live stage.

“It started privately — just a guy doing this for his kids, ” noted Sonntag. “It exploded during the pandemic and it got bought out for a schwack of cash. There’s (merchandise) for it everywhere. Every single store I’ve been in, there’s merch for this. ”

Sonntag didn’t set out to become one of the faces of a global children’s brand yet he’s not really complaining, either

Although he doesn’t possess kids of his own, Sonntag is thriving in that environment while utilizing his wide range associated with skills as an acting professional, singer and dancer. This individual also plays multiple instruments, including the violin, piano, trumpet plus guitar.

“I really feel very lucky to be able in order to interact with children around the country every day and to give them what is quite likely their first experience with reside theatre plus live entertainment, ” this individual said. “Because it’s something that’s so close to my heart and so special for me, it feels excellent to become giving that gift in order to kids and giving that will gift to families. Thousands and thousands of people come to observe this display, which will be bonkers, yet they love it and I actually can only hope they leave having because much fun as I did. ”

Sonntag’s part in CoComelon is that of the father who else encourages their son JJ to use his imagination. Along with help from friends and family, JJ comes to realize that he can accomplish anything.

“It’s definitely a family show (but) it’s not simply for kids, ” Sonntag explained. “Sometimes looking away at the audience the parents are having more fun than the kids are usually. It’s all about coming together and working together to solve problems plus using your own imagination and truly being yourself. ”

Sonntag isn’t sure what the particular future holds for CoComelon — or even himself, to get that matter — but there’s already talk of another tour within 2023, with Canada  potentially being on the radar.

Could that include a stop in his hometown?

“That would be a dream pertaining to sure to come back to Regina and carry out, ” added Sonntag, who’s keeping an open mind regarding his future in showbiz. “This is usually something We didn’t actually see coming but I feel incredibly grateful for. I’m just keeping my eyes forward plus auditioning meant for whatever comes my way. You never know what arrives next. You just have to keep pushing and keep believing in yourself and keep working. It may take you to some really fun plus crazy places. ”
